Sofitel Marrakech Palais Impérial & Spa: French Elegance in the Red City

A polished five-star stay in Hivernage — gardens, pools, spa rituals, Atlas Mountain views and the Medina close enough for easy Marrakech days and atmospheric evenings.

How we put this review together

This review was researched, written and approved by the GoToBeach product team, drawing on official hotel information, supplier detail and our wider Marrakech product experience.

My most recent visit to Sofitel Marrakech Palais Impérial & Spa was on 29 April 2026, when I had lunch at the hotel with Zakia, the Sales Director, as part of a Marrakech product trip built around Sofitel Marrakech and Es Saadi.

Hotel facilities, restaurant opening times, spa access and seasonal services can change, so please confirm the current details with us when you book.

Sofitel Marrakech Palais Impérial & Spa is one of those Marrakech hotels that makes sense the moment you understand its location. It is not buried deep inside the Medina, and it is not isolated out in the Palmeraie. It sits in Hivernage — close enough to the old city for the real Marrakech experience, but calm enough to feel like a proper five-star retreat when you return.

It's a hotel I often point UK holidaymakers towards when they're comparing luxury hotels in Marrakech — especially those who want a comfortable base with gardens, pools and a spa, plus easy access to the Medina, without giving up the polish of an international five-star.

Marrakech can be intense. That is part of its magic — the souks, the calls to prayer, the traffic, the colours, the spices, the rooftops and the evening energy of Jemaa el-Fna all stay with you. But after a few hours in the city, many guests want somewhere elegant and reassuring to come back to, and Sofitel Marrakech is built for exactly that kind of traveller.

My latest visit confirmed what I have always felt about this hotel: it has never really compromised on quality. There's the polished, confident feeling you expect from a serious Marrakech five-star, but it still keeps the warmth and ceremony that make Morocco special.

The arrival: Moroccan ceremony from the first minute

One of the details I always remember at Sofitel Marrakech is the welcome at the door — the traditional Moroccan dress, the calm greeting and the genuine sense of arrival. It may sound like a small thing, but in Marrakech these first impressions matter. Before you've even reached reception, the hotel already feels elegant, Moroccan and properly hosted.

That's one of the reasons I have a real soft spot for it. Some five-star city hotels can feel anonymous; this one doesn't. It has theatre, atmosphere and a little sense of occasion that works so well in the Red City.

The location: Hivernage, not hidden away

The first thing to get right in Marrakech is the area. Sofitel Marrakech Palais Impérial & Spa is in Hivernage, one of the city's most established hotel districts. For many UK travellers this is a very practical choice: you're close to the Medina, Koutoubia Mosque, Jemaa el-Fna, restaurants, cafés and evening life, but you're not sleeping inside the busiest part of the old city.

That balance matters. A riad inside the Medina can be romantic and atmospheric, but it may not suit every guest — especially if you want larger rooms, full hotel facilities, pools, a spa, easy vehicle access and a more resort-like rhythm. Sofitel gives you the Marrakech experience without making the hotel stay feel complicated.

Another practical advantage is the evening location. The hotel is extremely close to both Jad Mahal and the Casino de Marrakech — around a two-minute walk depending on your pace — useful if you want nearby restaurants, casino access or an evening out without a long taxi ride back.

Place Good to know
Hivernage One of Marrakech's best-known hotel districts — handy for comfort, restaurants and easy access.
Medina & souks Close enough for sightseeing, shopping and old-city atmosphere.
Koutoubia / Jemaa el-Fna The classic Marrakech evening area — roughly half a mile away, easy to combine with dinner or a guided visit.
Marrakech Menara Airport About a 10-minute drive — a short, easy transfer by city standards.
Jad Mahal / Casino de Marrakech Very close by — roughly a two-minute walk, useful for evenings out.

The feel: Moroccan warmth with French polish

Sofitel as a brand has always leaned into French elegance, and in Marrakech that works especially well. The hotel pairs a polished international service style with Moroccan design cues — warm colours, palms, gardens, terraces and that unmistakable Red City atmosphere.

This is not a tiny hidden riad and it shouldn't be judged like one. It's a full-service five-star with a resort feel: bigger spaces, pool areas, restaurants, bars, a spa and a level of structure that many guests appreciate after a busy day outside.

Rooms and suites

The rooms and suites are designed for guests who want comfort as well as location. Expect the classic Sofitel combination of soft bedding, elegant finishes and Moroccan-influenced details, with many rooms offering a balcony or views towards the gardens, pools or the wider city backdrop.

Room names and exact categories can change by season and supplier, so the safest approach is to tell us what matters most — balcony, view, extra space, twin beds, interconnecting options or a suite-style layout — and we'll match the room to how you want to use the hotel.

Room choice Best for
Classic / Superior-style rooms Couples or short-stay guests who want a comfortable Marrakech base.
Luxury / garden or pool-view rooms Guests who want a more relaxing outlook and a stronger resort feel.
Suites Longer stays, special occasions and guests who want more space.
Family or connecting options Worth requesting early, especially during school holidays or peak dates.

Restaurants, bars and the Sofitel atmosphere

One of the reasons Sofitel works well in Marrakech is that you don't have to leave the hotel every night if you don't want to. There's a collection of restaurants and bars with different moods, from refined dining to poolside and lounge-style evenings.

The line-up includes names such as L'Orangerie, So Lounge, Le Jardin, L'Oasis and the Palmier Bar — so you have an elegant option, a relaxed one, something international, and somewhere to sit back after the Medina has worn you out in the best possible way.

Venue Style
L'Orangerie Refined French-Moroccan dining with an Atlas-facing terrace and live music.
So Lounge A vibrant evening venue in the gardens — Asian-leaning food, cocktails, live bands and DJ sets.
Le Jardin Relaxed international dining and the breakfast buffet, overlooking the gardens.
L'Oasis Poolside Mediterranean dishes — grills, salads and lighter plates.
Palmier Bar Easy poolside bar for cocktails and a relaxed drink.

As always in Marrakech, I'd still recommend going out for at least a few meals. A rooftop dinner in the Medina, a traditional Moroccan restaurant and a simple mint tea stop after the souks all add something the hotel alone can't give you.

Pools, gardens and spa

The gardens and pools are a big part of the appeal. Marrakech can be hot, dry and full of movement, so a shaded garden and a good pool scene make the city far easier to enjoy — especially if you're staying more than two or three nights.

The spa is another reason to consider Sofitel. Marrakech is a hammam city, and even if you don't normally book treatments, this is the place to try one. A proper Moroccan-style spa afternoon can completely change the rhythm of the holiday: souks in the morning, pool in the afternoon, hammam or massage before dinner.

Why it works for a Marrakech short break

Sofitel Marrakech Palais Impérial & Spa is especially useful for a short break because it removes friction. You can arrive, transfer quickly into the city, check into a full-service hotel, explore the Medina, come back to proper facilities, and still feel as though you're staying somewhere with a real sense of Marrakech.

That makes it a good fit for guests who want culture and comfort in the same holiday — and a strong choice for first-time visitors who want the excitement of Marrakech without feeling exposed to the city's intensity from morning until night.

Agadir, Marrakech or both?

This is where Morocco gets interesting. Marrakech and Agadir are completely different holidays. Marrakech is about culture, food, souks, rooftops, riads, gardens and atmosphere. Agadir is about beach, winter sun, the Atlantic promenade and easy all inclusive resort life.

If you want Morocco to feel memorable, Marrakech is hard to beat. If you want sunshine and a simple beach holiday, Agadir is usually easier. And if you have enough time, the strongest Morocco itinerary is often a twin-centre: a few nights in Marrakech, then several nights by the beach in Agadir.

If you're still comparing the two, read our Agadir vs Marrakech guide, or browse all our Morocco holidays.

Who it's for — and who it isn't

Strong fit for

  • Couples wanting a polished five-star Marrakech hotel with easy Medina access
  • First-time visitors who want the Red City experience without staying deep in the old town
  • Guests who value gardens, pools, a spa and international service standards
  • Short-break travellers who want comfort, location and atmosphere in one stay
  • Morocco twin-centre holidays combining Marrakech with Agadir beach time

Less suitable for

  • Travellers set on a small traditional riad hidden inside the Medina
  • Guests looking for a beach holiday — Marrakech is a city, not a seaside resort
  • Families wanting big water parks and classic resort entertainment
  • Anyone who wants the quiet isolation of the Palmeraie rather than central Marrakech

Booking & protection

Booking your Sofitel Marrakech holiday

Low deposit: a deposit of just £30 per person, plus the cost of your flights, secures the holiday at the time of booking — flights are dynamically priced, so seats are confirmed straight away. The remaining balance (hotel, transfers and any extras) is then spread across instalments up to departure.

Financial protection: your package may be ATOL protected under licence 11211 (Caria Holidays Ltd), depending on the exact services you book, and we'll confirm the level of protection before you complete your booking. ATOL is not travel insurance and does not cover medical issues, cancellations, delays or lost baggage, so we always recommend taking out suitable travel insurance as well.

Our advice: tell us whether you want a city break, a luxury Marrakech stay or a twin-centre Morocco holiday with Agadir, and we'll help you choose the right room, board basis and itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Sofitel Marrakech Palais Impérial & Spa?

It's in Hivernage, one of Marrakech's established hotel districts, close to the Medina, Koutoubia Mosque and Jemaa el-Fna (roughly half a mile away), while still offering a calmer five-star hotel setting. Marrakech Menara Airport is about a 10-minute drive.

Is Sofitel Marrakech close to the Medina?

Yes. The hotel is close enough for easy visits to the Medina, souks and Jemaa el-Fna, but it isn't hidden inside the old town — which makes it easier for guests who want vehicle access, pools, gardens and full hotel facilities.

Is Sofitel Marrakech good for couples?

Yes. It's a strong choice for couples who want a polished Marrakech hotel with gardens, a spa, restaurants, bars and easy access to the city's evening atmosphere.

Is Sofitel Marrakech good for families?

It can suit families who want a comfortable city hotel with space and facilities, but it isn't the same as an all inclusive beach resort in Agadir. Families with younger children should check room types and current children's facilities before booking.

Does Sofitel Marrakech have a spa?

Yes. Spa and wellness facilities, including a Moroccan hammam, are part of the hotel's appeal — a good way to combine sightseeing with relaxation and pool time.

What restaurants and bars are at Sofitel Marrakech?

The line-up includes names such as L'Orangerie, So Lounge, Le Jardin, L'Oasis and the Palmier Bar. Opening times, concepts and availability can vary by season, so we recommend checking before travel.

Is Marrakech better than Agadir?

Marrakech is better for culture, food, souks, riads, rooftops and city atmosphere. Agadir is better for beach, winter sun and easy all inclusive resort holidays. Many guests combine both in one Morocco trip.

Can GoToBeach book a Marrakech and Agadir twin-centre holiday?

Yes. We can arrange a Morocco twin-centre holiday combining Marrakech with Agadir, including flights, hotels, transfers and a joined-up itinerary.

Is Sofitel Marrakech close to Jad Mahal and the casino?

Yes. It's very close to both Jad Mahal and the Casino de Marrakech — around a two-minute walk depending on your pace — which is handy for nearby restaurants, casino access or an evening out without a long taxi ride back.

Is my Sofitel Marrakech holiday financially protected?

Flight-inclusive package holidays booked with GoToBeach may be ATOL protected under licence 11211, and we'll confirm the level of protection before you complete your booking. ATOL is not the same as travel insurance, so we recommend suitable cover as well.

Thinking about Sofitel Marrakech?

Tell us your dates, party size and whether you want a pure Marrakech city break or a twin-centre Morocco holiday with Agadir beach time, and we'll build the right package — flights, hotel and transfers.
