This is not a village of tavernas and mini-markets but a curving bay of large, well-kept resorts, landscaped gardens and spas, strung along a west-coast seafront that faces the sunset. The mood is unhurried and grown-up — days built around the pool, the spa and the beach, evenings around a good dinner and a drink as the light goes down over the water. What makes Ixia so easy is its position. Ixia beach & seafront

Ixia's beach is a long strip of fine pebble and coarse shingle running the length of the bay, backed by the resorts and their sunbeds rather than a promenade of bars. It shelves into clear, clean water that's lovely for swimming, though it's worth packing a pair of water shoes for comfort underfoot — this is a pebbly west-coast shore, not a soft-sand beach. The resorts manage their own stretches with loungers, parasols and beach service, and the water is generally calm close in, deepening for a proper swim a little way out.

The bay faces west, which is the whole point: Ixia delivers some of the best sunsets on Rhodes, night after night, and sitting on the shore or a terrace with a drink as the sky turns is the classic Ixia evening. Things to do around Ixia

The single best thing to do from Ixia is simply to go into Rhodes Town. Ten minutes up the coast, the medieval Old Town is one of the finest walled cities in Europe — a UNESCO site of cobbled lanes, the Palace of the Grand Master, the Street of the Knights, the harbour where the Colossus once stood and a maze of tavernas, shops and squares that come alive in the evening. Nearby, the leafy hillside of Rodini Park and the Acropolis of Rhodes at Monte Smith, with its ancient stadium and temple ruins and superb sunset views, are easy add-ons.

Further afield, the island opens up. Rhodes has one of the longest, sunniest seasons in Greece, and Ixia's west-coast bay stays fresh on the breeze even at the height of summer — here is how the months actually feel, and when our specialist would book.

Getting there

You fly into Rhodes International Airport (RHO, Diagoras), on the west coast, and the transfer to Ixia takes only about 10 minutes — one of the shortest airport hops in the Mediterranean. Plenty of UK airports run direct summer services to Rhodes, and every GoToBeach package includes your flights and your airport-to-hotel transfer at both ends.

Passports & entry

Greece is in the EU and the Schengen area, so British passport holders can visit for up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and be valid for at least three months after your planned departure. The EU's new EES and ETIAS systems are being phased in, so entry rules can change at short notice — always recheck the official guidance before you travel.

Money

The currency is the euro. Cards work fine in the resorts and larger restaurants, but carry some cash for taxis, beach bars and smaller tavernas in Rhodes Town. Tipping isn't obligatory but is appreciated — rounding up the bill or leaving a euro or two for good service is the local norm.

Health & insurance

A free UK GHIC card covers state medical care in Greece on the same terms as locals, but it's not a substitute for travel insurance — you'll still want comprehensive cover for repatriation, private treatment and cancellations. Getting around

Ixia's resorts are self-contained, so you can happily spend the week without transport. When you fancy Rhodes Town, frequent buses and cheap taxis make the ten-minute run up the coast easy. Hire a car only if you plan to explore Lindos, the Valley of the Butterflies and the south of the island under your own steam — otherwise you won't need one.
