Riads vs Hotels in Marrakech: Which Is Better for Your Holiday?

A practical GoToBeach guide to choosing between Medina riads, Hivernage hotels, Palmeraie resorts and full-service Marrakech stays.

How we put this guide together

This guide was researched, written and approved by the GoToBeach Morocco product team, using our Marrakech product experience, hotel inspections, supplier knowledge and feedback from UK holidaymakers.

The right answer is not simply “riad” or “hotel”. It depends on your travel style, budget, comfort level, location preference, arrival time and whether this is your first time in Marrakech.

The biggest mistake people make with Marrakech is choosing the accommodation style before understanding the city. A riad and a hotel can both be excellent, but they create completely different holidays.

A riad gives you atmosphere, intimacy and the feeling of sleeping inside old Marrakech. A hotel gives you space, pools, spa facilities, restaurants, easier vehicle access and a more familiar five-star rhythm. Neither is automatically better. The right choice depends on how you want Marrakech to feel.

One quick note on terminology: riad is the standard English spelling, although you may also see it written as riyad or ryad. In Marrakech you may also come across the word dar, which usually refers to a traditional Moroccan house or guesthouse. For holiday planning, the bigger question is not the spelling; it is whether you want a small old-city guesthouse experience or a full-service hotel base.

If you are planning your first Marrakech holiday, this is one of the most important decisions you will make. Choose well and the city feels magical. Choose badly and the same city can feel either too intense, too quiet, too complicated or not Moroccan enough.

Old-city Marrakech

The short answer

Choose a riad if you want a romantic, characterful stay inside or close to the Medina, and you are comfortable with smaller spaces, narrow streets, walking access and a more traditional style of hospitality.

Choose a hotel if you want a larger room, pool, spa, bar, restaurant choice, easy taxi access, more privacy and a calmer return after busy days in the souks.

If you want… Usually choose…
Old-city atmosphere, courtyards and Moroccan character A riad or dar in or near the Medina
Pools, spa, bars, larger rooms and easier access A hotel in Hivernage, Gueliz, Agdal or the Palmeraie
A first Marrakech trip with comfort and fewer surprises A full-service hotel, usually in Hivernage
A romantic short break with atmosphere A good riad or a luxury hotel close to the Medina
Family travel or multi-generation comfort A hotel with space, pool areas and easier transfers

What exactly is a riad?

A riad is a traditional Moroccan house, usually built around an inner courtyard or garden. Many have been converted into boutique guesthouses, with a small number of rooms, roof terraces, tiled courtyards, carved plasterwork, lanterns and a strong sense of place.

The best riads feel very special. You step off a busy Medina lane into a calm courtyard, and the noise of Marrakech almost disappears. For couples, design lovers and travellers who want the classic Marrakech feeling, that can be unforgettable.

But riads are not always straightforward. Many are hidden down narrow lanes. Some cannot be reached directly by car. Rooms can be smaller, stairs can be steep, and there may be no lift, no large pool, no bar and limited restaurant choice. That is not a problem if you know what you are booking. It can be a problem if you expected a normal hotel.

What do hotels do better in Marrakech?

Hotels in Marrakech are usually easier. They give you reception areas, larger rooms, pool scenes, spa facilities, bars, restaurants, room service, easier transfers and a more predictable service structure. For many UK holidaymakers, especially first-time visitors, that matters.

Areas such as Hivernage, Gueliz, Agdal and the Palmeraie offer a very different rhythm from the Medina. You can spend the day exploring the souks and Jemaa el-Fna, then return to a garden, pool, terrace or spa. For some guests, that balance is the whole point of Marrakech.

Hotels also work better if you want a luxury brand experience. A property such as Sofitel Marrakech Palais Impérial & Spa gives you Hivernage convenience, pools, gardens, spa facilities and an elegant international feel, while still keeping the Medina close enough for easy visits.

Riads vs hotels: advantages and disadvantages

Here is the quick side-by-side. Both work well in Marrakech — it really comes down to which set of trade-offs suits your trip.

At a glance Riad Hotel
Advantages Atmosphere and old-city character; courtyards, roof terraces and traditional design; intimate, boutique feel; walkable to the souks and Jemaa el-Fna; often great value for couples and short breaks Larger rooms and more space; pools, spa, bars and a choice of restaurants; easy taxi and vehicle access with smoother transfers; lifts and family-friendly facilities; predictable five-star service and a calmer base after the Medina
Disadvantages Often down narrow lanes with no direct car access; smaller rooms, steep stairs and frequently no lift; limited or no pool, bar and restaurant choice; trickier late arrivals and luggage handling; can feel intense for first-timers Less old-city romance and Moroccan character; the best hotel areas sit slightly outside the Medina; larger and less personal than a riad; resort-style stays in Agdal or the Palmeraie can feel removed from the city

Best area to stay in Marrakech: the practical answer

Before choosing between a riad and a hotel, decide which Marrakech area suits you. The accommodation style and the area work together. A riad in the Medina feels completely different from a luxury hotel in Hivernage, and a Palmeraie resort creates a different trip again.

Area Best for Watch out for
Medina Riads, souks, atmosphere, rooftops Busy lanes, walking access, less space
Hivernage Luxury hotels, restaurants, easy access Less old-city romance than a riad
Gueliz Modern Marrakech, cafés, shopping More urban, less traditional
Agdal Larger hotels and resort-style stays Less atmospheric, more hotel-led
Palmeraie Quiet resorts, gardens, space More removed from the Medina

Staying in the Medina

The Medina is the heart of old Marrakech. It is where you find souks, riads, rooftop restaurants, craft shops, spices, motorbikes, donkeys, colour and controlled chaos. If you want the old-city Marrakech that people describe when they talk about hidden courtyards and lantern-lit rooftops, the Medina is where that feeling is strongest.

A Medina riad is best for couples, confident travellers and short cultural breaks. You can walk to the souks, Jemaa el-Fna and many of the classic sights, and the accommodation itself becomes part of the experience. But the Medina is not always easy. Taxis may not reach the door, lanes can be confusing, luggage handling matters and late-night arrivals need to be arranged carefully. For first-timers who want minimum stress, I would only choose a Medina riad if it is well located and properly supported.

Bottom line

Choose the Medina for atmosphere and old-city charm. Avoid it if easy taxis, large rooms, lifts and pool space matter more.

Staying in Hivernage

Hivernage is often the easiest answer for first-time visitors who want Marrakech without too many complications. It sits outside the deepest Medina lanes, but close enough for Koutoubia, Jemaa el-Fna, restaurants and evening life. You get hotels, proper entrances, easy vehicle access, gardens, pools, bars and a calmer return after sightseeing.

This is where full-service hotels such as Sofitel Marrakech and Es Saadi make sense. You are not sacrificing the city; you are giving yourself a more comfortable base from which to enjoy it. For couples who want polish, for friends who want evenings out, and for guests who want Marrakech to feel luxurious rather than logistically demanding, Hivernage is one of the strongest areas to consider. It is also a good area to combine with a few nights in Agadir afterwards.

Bottom line

Choose Hivernage if this is your first Marrakech trip and you want a luxury hotel base close to the Medina.

Staying in Gueliz

Gueliz is the modern side of Marrakech. It has cafés, shops, restaurants, wider streets and a more urban rhythm. It does not have the old-city romance of the Medina or the five-star hotel feel of Hivernage, but it can work well for guests who want a practical base, easier movement and a more everyday city atmosphere.

For repeat visitors, Gueliz can be useful because it gives you a different Marrakech. You are still within reach of the Medina, but the evenings feel less tourist-heavy and more local. For first-time UK holidaymakers, I would usually recommend Hivernage over Gueliz if the budget allows, because Hivernage feels more polished. But for travellers who like city life, restaurants, shopping and value, Gueliz should not be dismissed.

Bottom line

Choose Gueliz for a practical, modern city base. Choose Hivernage if you want a more polished luxury hotel feel.

Staying in Agdal

Agdal works best for larger hotels, more space and a slightly more resort-style Marrakech stay. It is not the area I would choose if your main aim is to step out into the Medina atmosphere, but it can be sensible for families, groups and guests who want hotel facilities first and old-city sightseeing second.

The advantage of Agdal is space. Hotels here can offer bigger footprints, pool areas and easier in-hotel time. The disadvantage is that it feels less atmospheric and less walkable than the Medina or Hivernage. If you are booking Marrakech as part of a wider Morocco holiday and you want facilities rather than romance, Agdal can be a practical choice. If you are coming for a short, atmospheric first visit, I would usually place Hivernage and the Medina ahead of it.

Bottom line

Choose Agdal for larger hotel facilities and space. Do not choose it if you want to feel surrounded by old Marrakech.

Staying in the Palmeraie

The Palmeraie is Marrakech’s quieter, more spacious resort side. It works for guests who want gardens, calm, larger grounds and a more removed setting. It is not the most convenient choice if you want to move in and out of the Medina several times a day, but it can be excellent if you want the city as an excursion rather than your full-time environment.

For luxury resorts, spa-focused stays and guests who prefer space over street life, the Palmeraie has a clear appeal. It can also suit return visitors who have already experienced the Medina and now want Marrakech in a softer, slower form. For first-timers, I would be careful: if you stay too far out and only dip into the old city once, you may miss the energy that makes Marrakech special. But for calm, gardens and a resort mood, it can be the right answer.

Bottom line

Choose the Palmeraie for space and quiet. Choose Hivernage if you want easier access to the Medina and evening life.

First time in Marrakech: riad or hotel?

For a first trip to Marrakech, I usually recommend a hotel unless the guest specifically asks for the riad experience. Marrakech is a wonderful city, but it asks a lot from first-time visitors: navigation, noise, bargaining, heat, crowds, different evening rhythms and a Medina layout that does not always make sense on day one.

A good hotel gives you a soft landing. You can explore the souks, gardens and rooftops during the day, then return to a pool, spa, restaurant, bar and reception team. That matters if you arrive late, travel with larger luggage, have children, prefer private transfers to stop at the door or simply want the first trip to feel easy.

My practical recommendation is simple: first-time couples who love atmospheric cities can choose a well-located riad, especially for two or three nights. First-time families, nervous travellers, late arrivals and guests who want Marrakech to feel comfortable should start with a hotel in Hivernage. If you want a specific example of this style, read our Sofitel Marrakech review or browse our Marrakech holidays.

Bottom line

For first-time visitors, Hivernage hotels are usually the safest choice. Riads are wonderful, but they suit guests who actively want the old-city experience.

Which is better for couples?

For couples, both can work beautifully. A riad is usually better if you want romance, atmosphere and a sense of discovery. Think candlelit courtyards, breakfast on a roof terrace, tiled interiors and the feeling of staying somewhere unique.

A hotel is better if you want spa time, pool days, a proper bar, easier taxis, more privacy and a smoother service experience. For a special occasion, I would often choose a luxury hotel in Hivernage or the Palmeraie if comfort matters more than pure old-city character. For a short romantic city break, a riad can still be the more memorable choice.

Which is better for families?

For families, I would usually start with a hotel. Marrakech is exciting, but it is not always simple with young children. A hotel gives you more space, easier transfers, pools, breakfast choice, lifts, larger bathrooms and somewhere calmer to return to.

A riad can work for families if you take a private riad, or if the children are older and everyone is comfortable walking through the Medina. But if you are travelling with younger children, grandparents or anyone who prefers easier logistics, a hotel will normally be the safer choice.

Marrakech and Agadir twin-centre holidays

One of the best ways to enjoy Morocco is not to choose between city and beach at all. A Marrakech and Agadir twin-centre holiday gives you culture first, then coastline. Start with three nights in Marrakech for souks, rooftops, gardens and dinner in the Red City, then continue to Agadir for four or five nights of beach, pool time and a more relaxed Atlantic resort rhythm.

The order matters. I usually prefer Marrakech first, then Agadir. Marrakech is exciting, but it is also busy and sensory. Ending the holiday by the beach gives the trip a much softer finish. A typical GoToBeach structure could be three nights in a Hivernage hotel or a carefully chosen riad, followed by four nights in an Agadir beach hotel. Transfers, hotels and flights can be packaged together, and our team can help you decide whether to make the Marrakech part more riad-led or hotel-led.

Best hotels in Marrakech

If you've decided a hotel suits you best, these are the Marrakech properties we rate most highly — grouped by the kind of stay they deliver. In Marrakech the area matters as much as the hotel, so we've noted that too.

Best riads in Marrakech

If you're drawn to the riad experience, these are some of the best-known and most-loved riads in Marrakech, almost all within the Medina. Sizes are small, so the better ones book up well ahead for spring and autumn.

Riad Area Why we rate it
El Fenn Medina (near Jemaa el-Fna) Design-led and stylish, with rooms across interconnected riads, courtyards, pools and a rooftop bar
La Sultana Marrakech Kasbah (Saadian Tombs) Five riads combined into a luxurious stay with rooftop dining, a spa and a hammam
Riad Kniza Medina Historic, antique-filled and family-run, with renowned personal service
Le Farnatchi Medina Intimate luxury suites and courtyards hidden in the lanes near the souks
Riad Yasmine Medina A small, photogenic boutique riad famous for its green-tiled courtyard pool
Riad Kheirredine Medina Refined, romantic and service-focused, with a lovely rooftop — good for couples
Riad BE Marrakech Medina Stylish design at friendlier value, with a rooftop pool — works for families too
La Maison Arabe Medina A larger riad-style hotel with a famous cooking school, pools and a piano bar

Tell us which of these appeals, or the style you're after, and we'll check availability and build the package around it. Not every property suits every date or budget, so we'll always suggest the closest match if your first choice isn't available.

My honest verdict

If you are travelling as a couple, already love atmospheric cities and want to feel old Marrakech from the inside, choose a good riad. If you are visiting Marrakech for the first time, travelling as a family, want a pool and spa, or prefer easy transfers and a calmer base, choose a hotel.

And if you want the best of both worlds, stay in a hotel in Hivernage or Gueliz and spend your days exploring the Medina, rooftops and souks. That gives you Marrakech without making every moment of the trip hard work.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in a riad or hotel in Marrakech?

For atmosphere, romance and old-city character, a riad is usually better. For pools, spa facilities, larger rooms, restaurants, bars, easy taxi access and a calmer base, a hotel is usually better. First-time visitors often find a hotel in Hivernage easier because it gives them the Marrakech experience without making every arrival, transfer and evening walk feel complicated. Confident travellers, couples and guests who actively want the Medina atmosphere may prefer a riad.

Which area of Marrakech is best for first-time visitors?

Hivernage is often the easiest area for first-time visitors because it combines full-service hotels, restaurants, vehicle access and a calmer base close to the Medina. The Medina is more atmospheric and better for riads, but it can be confusing on a first visit. Gueliz is modern and practical, Agdal works for larger hotels, and the Palmeraie is quieter and more resort-like. For most first-time UK holidaymakers, Hivernage gives the best balance.

Are riads in Marrakech safe?

Good riads in Marrakech can be very safe and well managed, but the exact location and access matter. Some riads sit down narrow Medina lanes where taxis cannot stop directly at the door, so it is important to check arrival arrangements, staff support, luggage help and how easy it is to return at night. Many quality riads are experienced with international guests and can arrange airport transfers or meet-and-assist points. Nervous first-time visitors may still prefer a hotel with a larger reception and direct vehicle access.

Are Marrakech riads good for families?

Some riads can work for families, especially private riads or properties with larger rooms, flexible bedding and staff who can help with transfers and meals. However, hotels are usually easier for families because they offer more space, pool areas, lifts, larger bathrooms, breakfast choice, restaurants and simpler arrival arrangements. If you are travelling with young children, grandparents or a lot of luggage, a hotel will normally be the safer and smoother option.

Do riads in Marrakech have pools?

Some riads have plunge pools or small courtyard pools, but they are not the same as hotel pool areas. Many riad pools are more decorative or cooling than swimming-focused. If a proper swimming pool, sun loungers, pool service and family-friendly pool space are important, a hotel or resort-style property is usually the better choice. A riad is about atmosphere and architecture first; a hotel is better for classic holiday facilities.

Can GoToBeach help me choose between a riad and a hotel?

Yes. Tell us your dates, budget, party size, arrival time and whether you want atmosphere, pool time, spa facilities, easy access or a Marrakech-and-Agadir twin-centre holiday. We can help you decide whether a Medina riad, Hivernage hotel, Palmeraie resort or Agdal hotel is the best match. The right choice is not only about the property; it is about how you want Marrakech to feel from morning to night.

Not sure where to stay in Marrakech?

Tell us whether you want riad atmosphere, five-star hotel comfort or a Marrakech-and-Agadir twin-centre holiday. We will help you choose the right base and build the package around it.
