Plaza Regency Sliema: Malta's Best Kept Secret for Affordable Holidays

When it comes to finding genuine value in Malta without compromising on location, character or comfort, Plaza Regency in Sliema is, quite simply, one of the finest options on the island. It is the kind of hotel that does not announce itself loudly — no grand lobby, no resort-scale spectacle — but one that delivers, consistently and reliably, everything you actually need for a thoroughly enjoyable Malta holiday. At GotoBeach, we have negotiated an exclusive arrangement with Plaza Regency that gives our customers access to rates and conditions you simply will not find elsewhere. If you are planning a Malta holiday and value is important to you — and it should be — this is a property that deserves your serious attention.

A Location That Puts the Whole of Malta Within Reach

Location is everything in Malta — and Plaza Regency gets it right. Situated in the heart of Sliema, one of Malta's most cosmopolitan and well-connected areas, the hotel places you within easy reach of virtually everything the island has to offer. The waterfront promenade is on your doorstep, Valletta — Malta's extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage capital — is a short ferry ride or bus journey away, and the ferry terminal connecting Sliema to the capital runs regularly throughout the day.

The public bus stop directly outside the hotel is one of Plaza Regency's most underrated advantages. From this single stop, you can reach almost every part of MaltaSt Julian's and its nightlife scene, Mellieha and its sandy beach, St Paul's Bay and its waterfront restaurants, and even the Gozo ferry terminal in the north. For guests who want to use their hotel as a base for genuine island exploration rather than simply staying poolside, Plaza Regency's transport connections are exceptional.

The immediate area around the hotel is equally appealing. Sliema's famous promenade — lined with cafés, restaurants and bars — is within walking distance, and the neighbourhood has a genuinely cosmopolitan character that sets it apart from Malta's more purely tourist-oriented resort areas. This is a place where local life and visitor life coexist comfortably, and that distinction makes the everyday experience of staying here noticeably more rewarding.

The Rooftop Pool: Plaza Regency's Signature Feature

Every hotel has something that makes it memorable. At Plaza Regency, it is the rooftop pool — a beautifully positioned swimming area on the uppermost floor of the building that offers uninterrupted views across Sliema and the surrounding coastline. In a city where rooftop experiences command a premium, Plaza Regency delivers this as a standard feature of a genuinely affordable hotel. It is, without question, what makes this property unique on the Sliema market.

The view from the rooftop in the late afternoon — with the limestone of Valletta glowing gold on the opposite shore and the Mediterranean stretching away to the horizon — is one of those moments that guests consistently describe as a highlight of their Malta stay. For the price point at which Plaza Regency operates, this is an extraordinary offering.

Sea View Rooms: Waking Up to the Mediterranean

Plaza Regency's sea view rooms are one of the hotel's most genuinely special features — and one that guests remember long after they return home. Waking up in the morning to the sound of birdsong and opening your eyes to an uninterrupted view of the Mediterranean is an experience that no amount of resort infrastructure can replicate. It is simple, beautiful and entirely authentic — which is precisely what makes it so memorable. If you have the choice, request a sea view room. You will not regret it.

Two Distinct Options: Hotel Rooms and Studio Apartments

One of Plaza Regency's most practical features is its dual accommodation format. The property operates as two distinct sections under one roof:

  • Hotel rooms — minimalist in design but comprehensively equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Clean lines, functional layout, good quality beds and all the essentials. Nothing superfluous, nothing missing.
  • Studio apartments — ideal for guests who want the flexibility to self-cater. Equipped with a kitchenette and the facilities to prepare your own meals and snacks, the studios offer a particularly good option for longer stays, couples who prefer flexibility, or guests travelling on a tighter daily budget.

The minimalist design philosophy throughout the property is a deliberate and successful choice. Plaza Regency does not try to impress with ornate decoration or unnecessary flourishes — it focuses instead on delivering exactly what guests need, in a clean, well-maintained and efficiently managed environment. There is a particular kind of hotel that understands this philosophy well: you walk in, the rooms are simple and unshowy, and yet everything you need is right there, working perfectly, without fuss. Plaza Regency is that hotel.

Dining Around Plaza Regency: Where to Eat in Sliema

One of the most compelling reasons to stay at Plaza Regency is what surrounds it. The hotel is positioned in one of Sliema's finest dining corridors, and the options within walking distance — from a quick morning coffee to a memorable evening meal — are genuinely excellent.

It is worth noting that Plaza Regency made a deliberate and, in my view, very sensible decision after the pandemic. The hotel previously offered a half board arrangement, but with so many outstanding restaurants within immediate walking distance, the team took the decision to focus instead on strengthening the breakfast buffet — which is now broader and better than before — and leave the evenings free for guests to explore the exceptional dining scene on their doorstep. It is a decision that reflects the hotel's confidence in its surroundings, and one that most guests appreciate once they discover what is available.

Fresco's — The Restaurant Directly Opposite

If there is one restaurant I would urge every Plaza Regency guest to visit, it is Fresco's — situated directly opposite the hotel, so close to the water's edge that describing it as sitting on the sea rather than beside it would not be an exaggeration. The official description is Maltese cuisine, but the menu is considerably broader than that label might suggest — traditional Maltese dishes sit alongside a strong Italian influence, and the quality across both is consistently high.

My personal recommendation — and one I have returned to every time I visit — is the seabass. I once asked the kitchen why it is so particularly good at Fresco's, and they explained their method: the fish is first grilled, then finished in the oven until perfectly cooked through. The result is something that genuinely justifies the question. If, on the other hand, pasta is more your preference, the seafood pasta is equally well executed and very much worth ordering.

One piece of advice on the desserts: choose yours the moment you sit down. The puddings at Fresco's are made fresh and in small quantities — they do not keep, and they sell out. This is a very good sign about the kitchen's approach, but it does mean that those who leave the decision until after their main course sometimes find the choice has narrowed considerably.

Vecchia Napoli — Pizza and Wine Downstairs

Immediately below the hotel, in the same building, is Vecchia Napoli — a pizzeria that does one thing and does it well. The menu is pizza only, which is either a limitation or a recommendation depending on how you look at it. What I would particularly highlight is the wine list, which is notably good for a casual neighbourhood pizzeria. If you want a relaxed evening with excellent pizza and a very decent glass of wine without the need to book or travel anywhere, Vecchia Napoli is an outstanding option.

Barracuda — The Fine Dining Option Nearby

For a more formal or celebratory evening, Barracuda is approximately 400 metres from Plaza Regency and is, in my assessment, one of the finest restaurants in Sliema. The menu draws from both Italian and Maltese culinary traditions, the quality of the cooking is consistently high, and the setting is beautiful. It is genuinely popular — and that popularity means one thing above all else: book in advance. Arriving without a reservation and hoping for a table is optimistic at best. If Barracuda is on your agenda, call ahead before you travel.

Costa Coffee — On the Ground Floor

For those who need their morning coffee before anything else, there is a Costa Coffee outlet on the ground floor of the hotel building. It is a small convenience but a genuinely useful one, particularly for early departures or a quiet breakfast before the buffet opens.

Valletta: One of Europe's Greatest Cities, On Your Doorstep

Staying at Plaza Regency gives you one of the finest access points to Valletta available from any hotel in Malta. The Sliema ferry — which departs from the waterfront a short walk from the hotel — crosses the Grand Harbour to Valletta in approximately 25 minutes and runs regularly throughout the day. It is one of the most scenic short ferry crossings in the Mediterranean, and it deposits you directly into the heart of one of Europe's most beautiful and historically significant capital cities.

Valletta — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — rewards every hour spent within its limestone walls. The baroque grandeur of St John's Co-Cathedral, the extraordinary views from the Upper Barrakka Gardens, the museums, the palazzos, the narrow streets of coloured balconied townhouses and the waterfront restaurants are all accessible within a short walk of the ferry terminal. For guests staying at Plaza Regency, Valletta is not a day trip requiring planning and logistics — it is simply a 25-minute ferry ride away, available whenever the mood takes you.

A Word on the Management

Plaza Regency is led by General Manager Lino Cremona — and the quality of the guest experience here reflects his leadership directly. Guest satisfaction at Plaza Regency is consistently high, and having visited the property on multiple occasions, I can say with confidence that this is a hotel that is genuinely well-run. The attention to detail, the standard of maintenance and the warmth of the service are all a reflection of management that takes genuine pride in what it delivers. For a hotel at this price point, the standard is exceptional.

GotoBeach's Exclusive Arrangement with Plaza Regency

At GotoBeach, we do not simply list hotels. We negotiate, inspect and select them — and Plaza Regency is a property we are genuinely proud to offer our customers. Our exclusive arrangement with the hotel gives GotoBeach customers access to preferential rates and conditions that are not available through comparison sites or direct booking.

This matters because Plaza Regency is already one of the most competitively priced quality hotels in Sliema. With the GotoBeach exclusive arrangement on top of that baseline, the value proposition becomes even more compelling. A rooftop pool, sea view rooms, a prime Sliema location, direct bus connections to the whole island, the Valletta ferry on the doorstep and some of Malta's finest restaurants immediately surrounding the hotel — all at a price point that makes it one of the most affordable quality options available on a Malta holiday.

Is Plaza Regency Right for You?

Plaza Regency is the right choice if:

  • Value for money is a genuine priority and you do not want to compromise on location to achieve it
  • You want to be based in a cosmopolitan, well-connected area rather than an isolated resort
  • You plan to explore Malta independently — by bus, by ferry and on foot — rather than staying within a resort complex
  • A rooftop pool with a view matters more to you than an extensive hotel spa
  • A sea view room and the sound of birdsong in the morning is your idea of a perfect start to the day
  • You are considering a longer stay and want the flexibility of a studio with self-catering facilities
  • You want easy, regular access to Valletta without the need for taxis or transfers
  • You want to be within walking distance of outstanding restaurants — including one of the finest sea-view dining experiences in Sliema

Plaza Regency is not the right choice if you are looking for a large resort hotel with extensive on-site facilities, an all inclusive board option, or the kind of entertainment infrastructure that properties like db San Antonio or Ramla Bay Resort deliver. But for the guest who knows what they want — a great location, a rooftop pool, sea view rooms, a clean and well-run hotel, and the freedom to explore one of the Mediterranean's most rewarding islands at their own pace — Plaza Regency is a genuinely excellent choice.
