Best Family Resorts in Crete: Our Hand-Picked Top 10 for 2026
After years of first-hand hotel inspections across Crete, here are the 10 family resorts we genuinely recommend for 2026 — from the Hersonissos beach strip to the quieter western Chania region. Every hotel on this list is available to book through GotoBeach.
Crete is one of the finest family holiday destinations in the Mediterranean — long, gentle beaches, family-sized hotel rooms, and buffet breakfasts that absorb a 7am wake-up from a four-year-old. But “family resort in Crete” still covers wildly different holidays: the lively Hersonissos strip works for teens, and the quieter Chania end of the island is where multi-generational groups actually relax.
This list covers the ten family resorts available through GotoBeach that we recommend for 2026. Every property has been visited first-hand by our team. For a broader introduction to the island, see our Crete holidays page.

The Hersonissos Coast
The Hersonissos area is the densest concentration of family resorts on the island — and the easiest decision for first-time Crete families thanks to the 25-minute transfer from Heraklion Airport. For a full overview of the area, read our Hersonissos vs Chania guide.
1. Lyttos Mare — Our All Inclusive Benchmark
Lyttos Mare is GotoBeach's benchmark all inclusive property on Crete — the hotel we recommend first when families want maximum facilities, a direct sandy beach and a comprehensive all inclusive programme. The pool facilities are outstanding and the kids' club is properly staffed. Family rooms are genuinely sized for families rather than squeezed into a standard room with an extra bed.
For sister-style resorts on the same coast, see our full Hersonissos hotels collection.
2. Creta Maris — The Eco-Credible Family Resort
Creta Maris is the resort we recommend when families care about sustainability without losing facilities. It runs on serious eco-credentials — local sourcing, plastic-free room amenities, a working farm component the kids' club uses for activities. The thalassotherapy centre is one of the finest in Crete.
One of GotoBeach's most consistently booked Crete properties, available with flights included from a range of UK airports.
3. Alexander Beach Hotel & Village — The Bungalow Estate
Alexander Beach is a 5-star bungalow village set in 55,000 square metres of subtropical gardens directly on the beach between Malia and Stalis. The bungalow format is exactly right for families with toddlers — you step out of the room directly onto a garden path leading to the beach or pool, with no lift queues or long corridors. Six freshwater pools, a spa and a well-staffed kids' club complete a very strong family package.
The Blue Flag beach stretches over 800 metres — one of the longest private beaches at any resort in the Hersonissos area.
4. Bella Beach Hotel — The Boutique Family Option
Bella Beach is built with local brick and marble directly on the Cretan sea — a more intimate and characterful property than the larger resort hotels of Hersonissos. The family room offering — with proper two-bedroom configurations available — is well-suited to families who find the 600-room mega-resorts overwhelming.
Three restaurants and a kids' club with experienced entertainers. A good shoulder-season choice for May and October when the bigger resorts feel half-occupied.
5. Avra Imperial Hotel — West-Coast Five-Star
Avra Imperial sits on Kolymbari Bay on the western end of Crete — architecture inspired by ancient Minoan palaces, 328 rooms and suites including private pool options, and a 1,900 square metre APIVITA spa. Six restaurants, four bars and a creche and mini club for younger guests.
For guests flying into Chania Airport (CHQ), the transfer is approximately 30 minutes. For our full guide to the area, see our Chania holidays page.
6. Akasha Beach Hotel & Spa — The Wellness Choice
Akasha Beach is GotoBeach's recommendation for couples and adult travellers who want a wellness-focused Crete holiday. The spa facilities are among the finest in the Hersonissos area, and the overall atmosphere is considerably more relaxed and refined than the larger all inclusive properties nearby. Directly on the beach, with strong food quality and a genuinely personal service approach.
7. Knossos Beach Bungalows & Suites — The Value Four-Star
Knossos Beach is the most competitively priced property on this list and the answer to families looking for a solid, reliable Crete holiday at a careful budget. The beach access, kids' club staffing and pool facilities all work well. The food is honest rather than gourmet, but the bones of a good family holiday are firmly in place. A strong choice for first-time Crete families.
8. Arina Beach Resort — The Quiet-Coast Pick
Arina Beach sits directly on the beach at Panormo — a small, quiet resort town on the northern coast between Hersonissos and Rethymno. For families with younger children who want a genuine sandy beach in a considerably more peaceful setting than Hersonissos, Arina Beach consistently delivers. The village of Panormo itself is authentic and unhurried.
9. Anemos Luxury Grand Resort — Georgioupolis's Long-Beach Pick
Anemos Luxury Grand sits on Georgioupolis beach — a 9km uninterrupted sandy strip that makes Hersonissos beaches look short. For families whose kids want to actually run on a beach, this is the answer. The resort is large (320 rooms) but the public spaces handle the volume well. A twenty-minute drive into Chania old town makes a perfect day-trip option.
10. Pepper Sea Club Hotel — The Adults Boutique
Pepper Sea Club is GotoBeach's recommendation for couples who want a boutique, intimate base in the Hersonissos area without committing to a large resort environment. The hotel is smaller in scale, well-designed and suited to adults who want a quieter Crete experience within easy reach of the area's restaurants and nightlife.

When to book — and what each month looks like for families
Crete's family-resort calendar is sharper than people realise. The wrong week at the right hotel is one of the most expensive mistakes we see.
April & early May — soft opening, cheap but cool
Most resorts open between 15 April and 1 May. Prices are 30–40% below July rates, weather is breezy with air at 21–24°C and sea around 18°C — fine for paddling but cold for swimming. Best window for grandparents and couples with one young child who do not need the sea.
Mid-May to mid-June — our favourite family window
Sea warms to 21–22°C by late May; air is reliably 24–28°C; resorts are open at full capacity but well under full occupancy. Kids' clubs are properly staffed but uncrowded — your child gets actual attention rather than queueing. Book by late February for the best rates.
July & August — peak family season
UK school summer holidays drive a 50–70% premium. Heat is real (30–34°C) and shade matters — verify your resort owns the front beach umbrellas before booking. Book early for July 2026 if you want a specific room category.
September — the underrated pick
The single best month for family Crete is mid-to-late September. Sea at 25°C, air at 28°C, UK schools back in session so resorts run at 50–60% occupancy. For under-school-age families, this is the prime window.
Frequently asked questions
Heraklion Airport (HER) or Chania Airport (CHQ) — which is better?
Heraklion (HER) for hotels 1–4, 6–8 (Hersonissos, Anissaras, Malia, Panormo) — typical 25–45 minute transfer. Chania (CHQ) for hotel 5 (Avra Imperial, Kolymbari) — approximately 30 minutes. For Anemos Luxury Grand (Georgioupolis), Chania airport is also the closer option at around 40 minutes. Always check your flight quote — booking the wrong airport adds an hour each way.
What does all-inclusive actually cover at these hotels?
At Lyttos Mare and Creta Maris — GotoBeach's main all inclusive recommendations — the programme covers all meals at the main buffet restaurant, unlimited local drinks including beer, wine and spirits, soft drinks and snacks throughout the day, and access to pools and beach facilities. Spa treatments, premium wines and motorised water sports are almost universally charged as extras. Always confirm the specific inclusions with your GotoBeach specialist before booking. For a full overview of all inclusive across the Mediterranean, read our all inclusive comparison guide.
How early should I book for July or August 2026?
For Lyttos Mare and Creta Maris, book early to secure your preferred family room category. For other hotels on this list, late February to mid-March is usually fine. GotoBeach offers low deposits from £30 per person, making early commitment straightforward.
Can I split a holiday between two Crete resorts mid-trip?
Yes — a twin-centre Crete holiday combining a Hersonissos property with the quieter Chania or Panormo end can be booked as a single ATOL-protected package. Speak to a GotoBeach specialist for current availability and pricing.
Is the tap water safe at these resorts?
All resorts provide bottled water as part of the all-inclusive package and use filtered ice. UK travel-health guidance recommends bottled or filtered water for drinking in Crete; tap water is generally safe for brushing teeth.
Do I need a visa or ETIAS for Greece?
UK passport holders currently do not need a tourist visa for Greece for stays under 90 days in any 180-day period. The ETIAS travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors to the Schengen area is expected to come into force in 2026 — verify on the official EU ETIAS page close to your travel date.
