A family holiday is judged by small things: how far the buggy travels to breakfast, whether the shallow end is shaded by three, how fast a six-year-old gets from room to water without crossing a road. Brochures skip that, so we go and look.

The standard

What makes a hotel a genuine child-friendly choice

Almost every Mediterranean resort says it welcomes families. Four things separate the ones that make a week easier from the ones that merely tolerate children.

  • Water at more than one depth. A deep pool plus a token splash bucket is not enough. We want a proper shallow pool, shaded for part of the day, and a gently shelving beach.
  • A kids' club with staff, hours and a room. We ask what ages it takes, when it closes and whether it runs in low season. Plenty exist on paper and open in July only.
  • Food that works at six o'clock. Early sittings, plain options alongside the buffet, enough high chairs. For teenagers, an afternoon snack bar usually decides it.
  • Rooms that sleep four properly. Connecting rooms, family suites and a bathroom two can use at once matter more than any waterslide.

Turkey

The most complete family product we sell

Turkey's ultra all-inclusive resorts are built for a week on site. In the Lara beach strip, Delphin Imperial Lara and sister hotel Delphin Palace both sit in our child-friendly list; next door in the Kundu resort strip, Voyage Kundu Hotel is built around an aquapark. Over in the golf resorts of Belek, IC Hotels Santai Family and Güral Premier Belek do the same at a higher grade. Antalya transfers are short, which counts with children.

Greece

Waterparks on Crete, family villages on Kos

On Crete, the resort of Hersonissos is the family capital: Creta Maris Resort spreads low across gardens onto the beach, and Star Beach Village Hotel sits beside its own waterpark for older children. Along the coast the Lyttos Beach resort runs ultra all-inclusive. On Kos, Canvas by Mitsis Family Village in the resort of Kardamena is exactly what its name says.

Malta

Short flight, small island, easy logistics

Malta suits families who would rather explore than stay put: everything is within an hour's drive and English is everywhere. The two family bases are St Paul's Bay and Qawra, home to the all-inclusive db Seabank Resort & Spa, and the bay at Mellieħa, where Ramla Bay Resort has its own stretch of shore. Malta's coast is more rock and platform than sand.

Egypt & Morocco

Aquaparks, and a warm sea in winter

The Red Sea is the answer to a February half-term. In the resorts at Hurghada, Pickalbatros Jungle Aqua Park Resort and Pickalbatros Aqua Park Resort are built around slides on a scale the Mediterranean does not attempt. Morocco offers club resorts inland at the city of Marrakech, including Pickalbatros Aqua Fun Club, and all-inclusive beach at Caribbean Village Agador in the bay at Agadir.

Choosing the right one

The age of your youngest child changes the answer more than anything else.

Toddlers and under-fives

Prioritise a short transfer, a shaded shallow pool and a room close to everything. Antalya and Kos win on transfer times, and we can ask for the right block.

Primary-school age

The sweet spot for aquaparks and kids' clubs, and where all-inclusive hotels in Lara earn their keep — everything is paid for, so nobody negotiates over ice cream.

Teenagers

Slides, wifi, a snack bar and somewhere to disappear to. Star Beach on Crete and the Hurghada aquapark resorts beat a polished quiet hotel.

Family all-inclusive varies more than any other board basis, and the gaps eat budgets.

A note on financial protection: your booking is covered by our ATOL licence, number 11211, when it includes flights. Services sold without flights sit outside that scheme, and we set out which protection applies before you pay. The certificate you receive lists every part of the trip that is covered.

Before you book

What to check before you book

  • Kids' club ages and opening dates. Many take four-year-olds and up, and several close outside the summer peak.
  • Beach or pool? Some resorts sit across a road from the sand, and with small children that road matters more than the star rating.
  • Room layout, not just capacity. "Sleeps four" can mean a sofa bed. Tell us who is sharing and we will match the room type.
  • School holiday dates. July and August cost most and fill first; late June and early September are warmer than expected and cheaper.
  • Insurance for everyone. Cover should start the day you book — we can help with arranging travel insurance for the party.

Frequently asked questions

Which destination is easiest with a toddler?
Antalya: the transfer to Lara, Kundu or Belek is short and the resorts are self-contained. Kos is the Greek equivalent. Malta works for a short flight, though its beaches are rockier.
Do the kids' clubs actually run outside July and August?
Some do, some do not, and we will not guess. We confirm ages, hours and season with the hotel before you pay a deposit — it is the most common disappointment we hear.
Are aquaparks included in the all-inclusive price?
If the park belongs to the hotel, almost always yes. If it is a separate attraction you pay at the gate, and we say which applies to each resort.
Can we get connecting rooms?
Often, but they are limited and allocated in booking order. Request them when you book, not on arrival, and we pass it to the hotel in writing. Family suites are more reliable.
Is Malta a good family choice?
Yes, with one caveat. The island is small, safe and English-speaking, but much of the coast is rock and lido platform rather than sand. If sand is non-negotiable, Turkey or Egypt suit better.
